American Calan

Precision Feeding Systems

OUR LEGACY

The origins of our innovation trace back to 1963, when Dr. Peter Broadbent in Scotland conceptualized a system for individually feeding group-housed animals. This led to the development of the Calan Broadbent Door, patented in 1966. In 1972, during a demonstration at the University of New Hampshire, Douglas Briggs—a young feed specialist—recognized the system's potential to revolutionize livestock nutrition. By 1973, he acquired the rights and founded American Calan Inc. in Northwood, New Hampshire.

Doug Briggs was a visionary who championed the adoption of Total Mixed Rations (TMR) in the U.S., significantly influencing modern ruminant feeding practices. Under his leadership, American Calan introduced the Data Ranger in the early 1990s—the only mobile TMR mixer designed specifically for research. Doug passed away on June 30, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and dedication. His contributions have been instrumental in advancing ruminant nutrition research globally.
